Dongying is situated in the Yellow River Estuary, and is geologically the youngest landform in China. Facing the Bohai Sea to the east, Dongying serves as an important point in the Circum-Bohai-Sea Region as well as a crucial component of the Shandong Peninsula City Cluster. As a pivotal area, the city connects four major economic regions, namely the Central Plains Economic Region, Northeast China Economic Region, Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Economic Region and Shandong Peninsula Economic Region. It is about 400km from Beijing, 320km from Tianjin and 310km from Qingdao.
Population and Natural Environment
This jurisdiction includes Dongying District, Hekou District, Guangrao County, Lijin County, Kenli County, Dongying Economic and Technological Development Zone (a national-level economic zone featuring high & new technologies and advanced equipment manufacturing) and the Dongying Port Development Zone (an economic zone featuring eco-friendly chemicals next to the Dongying Port). Covering 8243 square km, the city is home to 2.07 million residents.
The climate here falls under the category of North Temperate Zone semi-humid monsoon climate. The annual average temperature stands at 12.5°C, and is frost-free for about 206 days. There are four distinct seasons, and the climate in Dongying is generally very pleasant.
Land Resources: Dongying boasts abundant land resources. With nearly 3000km2 land available to be developed and a per-capita land area of 4575.6m2. Dongying has the largest available land resources in the eastern coastal area of China.
Water Resources: The Yellow River runs through Dongying for 138km, with an annual runoff volume of 33 billion m3. The peak water storage capacity is 1 billion m3 giving the city the highest per-capita water availability in Shandong Province. These water resource advantages provide for a reliable water guarantee for developing large-scale industries and modern agriculture.
Mineral Resources: Dongying is the main production area of the Shengli Oilfield, which has 4.8 billion tons and 38.2 billion m3 proven oil and natural gas reserves respectively. There are also rich bittern reserves. With 7.4 billion m3 offshore bittern reserve and 590 billion tons salt reserve underground, Dongying City is endowed with unique advantages for developing petrochemicals and salt chemicals. Dongying also has the largest geothermal reserve in Shandong Province, which stands at 460 billion m3, providing favorable conditions for urban heating, off-season vegetable growing and tourism development.
Marine Resources: The coastline of Dongying City stretches for 413km, that is 1/7 of the total in Shandong. 2/3 of Shandong’s tidal flat is in Dongying, covering an area of 1,200 km2. Within the15m fathom line, the offshore area covers 4,800 km2, accounting for 1/3 of Shandong’s total. All these conditions make Dongying an ideal place for developing aquaculture.
Unique Tourism Resources: The tourism resources in Dongying are both rich and unique. There are newly-deposited lands at the Yellow River estuary, as well as ancient lands within the city. In the north, there is a national-level nature reserve, showcasing natural environment of the Yellow River estuary and the wetland ecology in the estuary. In central Dongying, we can see modern industry, represented by the petroleum industry. Southern Dongying boasts an ancient and splendid culture, as it was the site of the ancient state of Qi.
In 2014, the GDP of Dongying City reached 343 billion yuan, ranking it 47th in China. Local fiscal revenue amounted to 20.6 billion yuan; the per-capita disposable income of urban residents reached 36,940 yuan; the per-capita rural net income stood at 14,456 yuan; and its urbanization rate has reached 64%. The city’s social security level is now leading the cities of Shandong Province.
In 2014, the number of industrial enterprises with annual revenue of 20 million yuan or more from their main business operations was 921. The profits from their main business operations were 1.3 trillion yuan. There are 606 enterprises with revenue from their main industrial business operations over 100 million yuan, among which 27 enterprises were over 10 billion yuan, and five were over 30 billion yuan, namely Fangyuan, Huatai, Haike,Dahai, Wanda , Lihuayi and Jinling.
The value of exports and imports totaled 13.256 billion USD in 2014, of which imports were 7.161 billion USD and exports were 6.095 billion USD.
At the end of 2014, the cumulative amount of foreign capital totaled 2.4 billion USD. A number of internationally renowned enterprises have invested in Dongying City, including Stora Enso, Schlumberger, Marubeni, Air Liquide, Solvay, Lotte and China Resources.
Petrochemicals: There are 119 chemical enterprises with annual revenue of at least 20 million yuan from their main business operations in Dongying. Their industrial output value totaled 370.94 billion yuan and revenue from their main business operations reached 371.86 billion yuan in 2014.
Rubber Tire Manufacturing: There are 76 rubber tire manufacturers with annual revenue of 20 million yuan or more from their main business operations in Dongying. Their industrial output value totaled 175.28 billion yuan and revenue from their main business operations reached 173 billion yuan in 2014. Guangrao County of Dongying City was recognized as the “Export Base of Rubber Tires in China” by the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals and Chemicals Importers and Exporters.
Petroleum Equipment Manufacturing: There are 111 petroleum equipment manufacturers with annual revenue of 20 million yuan or more from their main business operations in Dongying. Their industrial output value totaled 93.43 billion yuan and revenue from their main business operations reached 89.95 billion yuan in 2014. Dongying District of Dongying City was recognized as the “Base of Petroleum Equipment Manufacturing in China” by China Association of Plant Engineering.
Non-ferrous Metals Smelting Industry: There are 13 non-ferrous metals smelting enterprises with annual revenue of 20 million yuan or more from their main business operations in Dongying. Their industrial output value totaled 112.79 billion yuan and revenue from their main business operations reached 112.75 billion yuan in 2014.
Salt Chemicals: There are 26 salt chemicals enterprises with annual revenue of 20 million yuan or more from their main business operations in Dongying. Their industrial output value totaled 50.05 billion yuan and revenue from their main business operations reached 55.55 billion yuan in 2014. Kenli County of Dongying City was recognized as the “Export Base of Fine Chemicals in China” by the China Chamber of Commerce of Metals, Minerals and Chemicals Importers and Exporters.
Automobile and Auto Parts: There are 30 automobiles and auto parts manufacturers with annual revenue of 20 million yuan or more from their main business operations in Dongying. Their industrial output value totaled 30.97 billion yuan and revenue from their main business operations reached 30.89 billion yuan in 2014.

There is a seawall stretching for 200km. The installed power-generating capacity of the city amounts to 3.29 million kw, of which 1 million kw is wind power.
Dongying boasts an advanced highway network. The total mileage of classified highways is 8,013 km, and is connected with the national expressway network via Dongqing Expressway and Rongwu Expressway. Its railway is connected with the national railway network through Jiaoji Railway. The Deda Railway (Dezhou-Dajiawa) and Huangda Railway (Huanghua-Dajiawa) have marshaling stations in Dongying. The construction of Dongying Port Shugang Railway, Guangli Port Shugang Railway and Shouping Railwayhas been approved by the State and Shandong Province.
Dongying Shengli Airport has flights to Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu, Dalian, Xian, Hangzhou and Haikou.
Dongying Port is a national first-class open port. Two 30,000 ton bulk cargo berths and 10 liquid chemical wharves are in operation. A public pipe rack has been completed. Four 10,000 ton liquid chemical wharves and a 150,000 ton island-type crude oil wharf are under construction. Dongying-Lushun passenger and freight ro-ro vessel operates both ways every day.
