A Transportation Hub in North Chin

Like a pearl shining on Shandong Peninsula, Yantai is lying along the Yellow Sea and Bohai Sea, bordering on Liaodong Peninsula, Japan and South Korea across the sea. Covering an area of 13,700 km2 and with a total population of 7 million, Yantai is a critical center in the Economic Circle of the Bohai Sea. It serves as a logistics hub connecting Beijing-Tianjin Economic Circle, Yangtze River Delta and the Northeast Asia Economic Rim, as well as a gateway city to Japan and South Korea. The American Magazine “Forbes” has put Yantai at the 5th position on the list of Chinese cities most favorable for logistics development.

Beautiful Landscape

Surrounded by mountains and seas, Yantai is blessed with the picturesque landscape and four distinct seasons. It is a vibrant and beautiful coastal city favorable for human settlement, known as the “Fairyland on Earth and City of Wine”, where you can enjoy blue sea and sky, golden sunshine and beach, miraculous islands, spectacular Penglai Pavilion, illusive mirage, clusters of grapes and numerous hot springs. The city, as a well-known tourist resort, has 90% air quality excellence rate and 43.6% forest coverage.

Administrative Divisions

Yantai covers an area of 13,700 km2, with a total population of 6,520,000. The greater Yantai includes five districts (Zhifu, Fushan, Laishan, Muping and High-tech Zone), seven county-level cities (Penglai, Longkou, Qixia, Haiyang, Zhaoyuan, Laiyang and Laizhou), one county (Changdao) and one state-level economic and technological development zone (Yantai Economic and Technological Development Zone).

Yantai apple, Laiyang pear and Yantai big cherry enjoy a time-honored reputation. The colors of red and green are shining on this fertile land, with plentiful vigor and infinite enthusiasm.

Yantai is known as the only international vine & wine city in Asia and one of the top seven vine coast in the world. There are 152 wine makers, with famous brand names like Changyu, Great Wall and Weilong. The wine production accounts for 1/4 of the total in the nation.

Thanks to the rich and diversified marine fishery resources, Yantai has become an important fishery center in China, rich in over 200 marine products, including sea cucumber, abalone, prawn and different fish.

Yantai is abundant with mineral resources. The reserves of magnesium, molybdenum and talcum rank among top five in the country. Both the reserve and production of gold are No.1 in China, which account for 1/4 and 1/3, respectively. The coastal continental shelf is rich in petroleum and natural gas and has enormous potential to be tapped in the future.

History and Culture

Yantai is well known in China as ”Home of Peking Opera” and “Home of athletics”. Fourteen programs, such as legend of Eight Immortals Crossing the Sea, have been listed in the National Intangible Culture Heritage. The Haiyang Yangko Dance was performed at the Opening Ceremony of the 29th Olympic Games in Beijing.

Over the past 30 years since reform and opening up, Yantai has been witnessing rapid economic development with notable improvement of economic strength and well-established industrial foundation. In 2014, the city’s GDP amounted to 97.7 billion US dollars with per capita GDP of over 14,000 US dollars. The total economy ranked the 2nd in Shandong Province and the 21th in the nation.

Food Processing

Gold

Active Consumer Market

In 2014, the per capita disposable income of Yantai’s urban residents is over 5,900 US dollars, per capita consumption expenditure over 3,900 US dollars. The total retail sales of consumer goods reached 38.7 billion US dollars. AEON, Wal-mart, Auchan, Metro and Hong Kong New World have opened stores in Yantai. Tesco, Carrefour and Lotte are preparing to establish their stores in Yantai.

Well-established Development Areas and Industrial Parks

There are four national-level development areas and special zones in Yantai, including Yantai Economic Development Area (YEDA), Yantai Bonded Port Zone and Yantai High-tech Industrial Park and Zhaoyuan Economic-technological Development Area. Meanwhile Yantai also has 10 Provincial-level development zones. YEDA ranks the 6th in the comprehensive evaluation of all national development areas in the country. Pillar industries of YEDA include automobile, ship, computer, mobile phone and new materials. Yantai Bonded Port Zone focuses on building a regional trade center, shipping center and high-tech industrial center. Yantai High-tech Industrial Park emphasizes on bio-technology, electronics and IT, new materials, services outsourcing, aviation technology and marine technology. The development priorities of Zhaoyuan Economic-technological Development Area are gold, electronics and IT, automotive parts, machinery manufacturing, new energy and new materials.

Tourist Resort

Yantai is known as one of the most attractive tourism cities in China. In Yantai there are 60 A-level tourist attractions such as Penglai Pavilion-one of the most famous four pavilions in China, where the legendary Eight Immortals crossed the sea, Kunyu Mountain–the origin of Quanzhen Sect of Taoism, visited by the ancient Chinese emperors across 2000 kilometers, Changshan Islands–the celestial islands over the sea, consisting of 32 small islands. Besides, there are three national forest parks, one national natural reserve and one national wetland park. There are also 9 golf clubs, in which the biggest course has 279 holes. In 2014, Yantai hosted 148 exhibitions and 52 high-level sports games. All these make Yantai a worthwhile resort for settlement, traveling, vacation, health care, sports and exhibitions as well.

In 2014, Yantai has received 54.8 million visitors including 550,000 from abroad.

Civilized and Harmonious City

Yantai was awarded “The National Civilized City” for four consecutive terms, and “Model City for Comprehensive Management of the Public Security” (The “Chang’an Cup”) for six consecutive terms.

Infrastructure Construction

Harbor

Yantai Harbor is one of the top ten harbors in China. There are 56 berths of over 10,000 DWT. The maximum water depth is -20 meters. The direct navigation lines reach more than 100 ports of over 70 countries and regions. In 2014, the handling capacity of cargo was over 320 million tons, container 2.35 million TEU.

The west Yantai Harbor under construction is planned to build 65 berths of 50,000-300,000 DWT. After completion, it will become the most important hub in North China, with a handling capacity of 200 million tons for cargo and 15 million TEU for container.

Yantai-Dalian train ferry is the 1st in China and the 35th in the world which distance is more than 100 km. It has shortened a distance of 1600 km from northeast area to Shandong Province and east coastal areas, forming a new transit corridor connecting Liaodong Peninsula and Shandong Peninsula, linking Europe and Asia and radiating east coastal areas.

There are passenger and cargo liners between Yantai and Inchon, Pyeongtaek, Busan of South Korea. The preliminary study on Sino (Yantai)-South Korea rail ferry is now under way.

Airport

Yantai Laishan International Airport is open to air traffic with more than 40 domestic and international cities, with an average of 470 departure flights each week, or over 570 in peak time. Airlines are available to Hong Kong, Taipei, Inchon, Busan and Jeju island of South Korea, Osaka of Japan. There are also freight flights for Brussels-Yantai-Inchon based on the fifth-freedom rights. The airlines are in the forefront in the nation. In 2014, the passenger throughput of the airport reached 4.3 million.

The new airport, Yantai Penglai International Airport, will become one of the most important airports in North China, with a handling capacity of 6.5 million passengers and 90,000 tons of cargos and mails each year.

Land Routes

Yantai has a highway mileage of 18,000 km, including 507 km of expressway. Shenyang-Haikou, Rongcheng-Wuhai, Weihai-Qingdao Expressway run through the whole area.

Railways in Yantai connect with arterial lines in China. The Qingdao-Yantai-Weihai-Rongcheng intercity railway opened in December 2014, forming a one-hour circle among Qingdao, Yantai and Weihai. People can go from Yantai through to Beijing, shanghai and Ji’nan by high-speed rail.

The Bohai strait tunnel between Yantai and Dalian has been included in the national planning. When completed, it will connect the Liaodong Peninsula and Shandong Peninsula across the sea, and it will take only one hour to go from Yantai to Dalian.


Investment Environment


Yantai is one of the six Golden Cities in China for business environment awarded by the World Bank.

Emphasizing Cultivation of Talents

Yantai has 15 colleges and universities, 58 vocational and technical institutes with 300,000 students. There are also 83 provincial-level engineering technology research centers, 86 provincial-level enterprise technical centers and 20 national enterprise technical centers. There are a number of international schools like Yantai Korean School, Yew Wah international School, Yantai Huari Foreign Languages School and Yantai Honshu Japanese School. Yantai has a state-level software and services outsourcing training center which is the second one approved by the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.

Improving Health Care

Yantai has very well-established health care network, with 5384 medical institutions. Foreigners can receive professional services in Yuhuangding Hospital, Sino-France Friendship Hospital, etc.

Sufficient Energy Supply

The city of Yantai provides sufficient electricity, water, gas, heating and has enough reserve capacity. The total installed power generating capacity is 8.16 million KW. The wind Power and other new energy facilities under construction will add new installed capacity of 5 million KW. The total water supply reaches 960 million cubic meters every year. The designed capacity for natural gas supply is 3 billion cubic meters every year.
